Pope Innocent III informs the bishops of Tripoli and Tortosa [Antaradensis] of a dispute between King Aimery of Cyprus and the church of Cyprus, represented at the Holy See by the bishop of Paphos, over tithes payable by Latin Christians, and tithes on the terciae of fruits and labour paid by Greeks, and on the offspring of animals. These have been retained by the king and others in spite of a specific decision by Pope C[elestine III] that excluded only the offspring of cattle and horses. text: May 30. Lateran. Pope Innocent III informs the canons of Tyre that the plebanus [of the Venetian church of St Mark] has complained about them. The church of St Mark in the Venetian third part of Tyre had been granted full parochial rights [in baptismo, penitentia, sepulturis, decimationibus, benedicendia nubentibus, tenendis scolis et mulieribus] by Popes Clement III and Celestine III until the province of Jerusalem would be restored to the Christians. Innocent himself had reversed the sentence, but had ordered the archbishop of Tyre to do nothing until the papal legates arrived. He has heard how since the death of the archbishop the patriarch of Jerusalem and the canons of Tyre have challenged the position of the plebanus. Innocent orders them to desist until the legates, Cardinal Soffred of St Praxedis and Cardinal Peter of St Marcellus, arrive.

text: Mar. 5. Lateran. Pope Innocent III writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem, the papal legate. He approves the election by the canons of the church of Antioch and the translation to the patriarchate of Antioch of the bishop of Ivrea that resulted from the patriarch of Jerusalem’s mediation. He wishes the patriarch of Jerusalem to confer on the new patriarch the insignia of his office as soon as possible and he expects the two patriarchs to work together in the interests of the Holy Land. Turning to the conflict between the king of Armenia, the Knights Templar and the count of Tripoli, he orders the patriarch of Jerusalem to work for reconciliation and to insist on the observance of truces, given the danger to the Holy Land, while persuading the king to restore the Templar properties. With the ending of the dispute between Duke Philip of Swabia and Otto [of Brunswick], who has gained the [western] empire, he hopes assistance will come. Meanwhile he is sending a large sum of money, to be spent on the needs of the Holy Land by the patriarch, the Knights Templar and the Hospitallers of St John.

Pope Innocent III has heard that the legitimacy of the election by the chapter of Nicosia of magister Durandus eiusdem ecclesie thesaurarius to the archbishopric has been challenged by many, including Galterus de Monte Beliardo, a parishioner. Durandus has claimed that this challenge is motivated by the animosity Galterus has for the king. The pope does not have enough evidence. He asks the patriarch of Jerusalem to judge the case. If he finds for the elect he should consecrate him and confer the pallium.
