Writing to Petrus prior and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre, Pope Celestine II notes that King Fulk of Jerusalem and Queen Melisende wished to establish a monastery for professed men or women in the church of Sanctus Lazarus at Bethania and were supported in their appeal to the Holy See by Patriarch William of Jerusalem and his hierarchy. Pope Celestine assents to this and confirms the gift to the Holy Sepulchre of the casale of Thecua by King Fulk in exchange for casalia surrendered by the canons to provide a living for the community at St Lazarus.

Galterius Cesareę dominus confirms under seal the gift made by his father Eustachius Granerius to Girardus prior and the Holy Sepulchre of half of the casale called Defiaisse and the land adjacent to it. Galterius records that as an eleemosynary act he has supervised the marking with crosses on stones of the boundaries between the lands of Defiaisse and neighbouring casalia, listed as those belonging to St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat, the church of St Peter of Caesarea and the church of St John of Sebastea; other casalia called de la Forest and Sabarim; and a casale called Bufles that belongs to Galterius himself. Eugenius III confirms for Petrus prior and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre the gifts of his predecessors Calixtus II, Honorius II and Innocent II, and the gifts made by Duke Godfrey, King Baldwin I and Patriarch Arnulf, and other benefactors. He refers to their right to live under the Augustinian Rule, takes them under papal protection and lists the following properties: in the bishopric of Bethlehem the casale of Thecua, given by King Fulk; the castle [castrum] of Mahumeria with its church; in the diocese of Caesarea castrum Feniculi with its church; in the city of Jaffa the church of St Peter; in the city of Tyre the church of Sancta Maria antiqua sedes; the casale of Sancta Erina in the diocese of Tyre; the castle [castrum] of Gith; in the diocese of Tripoli the church of the Holy Sepulchre on Mont Pèlerin, the church of Sanctus Georgius in Montanis and the villa called Biuora, given in exchange for Megina; together with properties in southern Italy and Provence. Melisende, dei gratia Iherosolimorum regina, confirms an exchange made in the reign of her husband King Fulk between Johannes Patricius and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre. This involved the 2 casalia of Megina and Mezera being exchanged for the 2 casalia of Caphermelich and Anquina. It had been approved in Melisende’s presence by Babinus, from whom Johannes held the casalia in feodum, by Petrosus, the brother-in-law of Johannes, by Bruna, the wife of Johannes, and by their sons Thomas and Eustachius, on condition that if any challenge to the exchange arose the canons of the Holy Sepulchre would be obliged to restore the casalia to Johannes and his heirs. A challenge was made in King Fulk’s reign and the Holy Sepulchre appealed to the crown. Melisende therefore confirms the exchange under seal. Baldwin, per gratiam dei in sancta Iherusalem Latinorum rex quartus, with the assent of Queen Melisende his mother and Amalricus comes Ascalonitanus his brother, confirms as a sealed eleemosynary grant the exchange made in the time of his father Fulk rex Iherosolimorum illustris, in which Johannes Patricius recorded that he had exchanged 2 of his casalia, called Megina and Mezera, for 2 casalia, called Caphermelich and Anquina, which belonged to the Holy Sepulchre. He made this exchange with the consent of Babinus from whom Johannes held his feodum and in the presence of King Baldwin and Queen Melisende. The exchange made by Johannes had been approved by his relation [cognatus] Petrosus, his wife Bruna, and his sons Thomas and Eustachius. A condition of the exchange was that if Johannes or his heirs infringed the rights of the Holy Sepulchre, such damage would be made good. Since disputes had arisen in the reign of King Fulk over the exchange, its terms are now confirmed.
