Magister Anselmus canonicus Antiochenus, David canonicus Antiochenus and Erardus canonicus Antiochenus have informed the pope that during the vacancy in the patriarchate Prince Raymond Rupen of Antioch, fearing conspiracy, had extorted an oath of loyalty from them. They have asked Pope Honorius III for advice. The pope declares that they are not bound by this oath, which would limit their rights to defend their church.

Pope Honorius III has heard that King John of Jerusalem has left Damietta and returned to Acre because of the threat to his dominions, but he has also heard that John intends to attack the kingdom of [Cilician] Armenia. Writing to the patriarch and chapter of the church of Antioch, Pope Honorius III recounts how, 50 years or more before, Patriarch Aimery of Antioch had reduced the number of canons in the church of Antioch from 18 to 12 or 13, in order to have the funds to strengthen the defence of the castle of Cursarium. Afterwards the number had increased, but now, at the request of the patriarch and chapter, the pope confirms a limitation to a total of 16 canons.
