text: Feb. 4. Jerusalem. Amalric, per dei gratiam in sancta civitate Ierusalem Latinorum rex quintus, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the leprosary of St Lazarus of Jerusalem and its sick. He confirms a rent of 72 besants, taken from the royal revenues from David Gate and payable in 4 instalments of 18 besants each at Easter, the Nativity of St John the Baptist, Michaelmas and Christmas. The rent is made up in the following way. The king has given 50 of these besants for the maintenance of one leper in perpetuity. Added to this is a rent of 10 besants, drawn from the money fief [assisia] attached to the pincernatus, which was given by Odo de Sancto Amando, and a rent of 12 besants was given by the king in exchange for a house next to the macellum in Jerusalem, which the brothers of St Lazarus surrendered to him. In the [burgess] curia of King Amalric, Hodeardis, widow of Oto de Verduno, with the agreement of her sons Henricus and Guido and her daughters Isabella, the wife of Iohannes Aschetinus, and Benedicta, the wife of Ioffridus filius Simonis iudicis, and also Iasza, the wife of Henricus Balistarius, makes a sale, masked as an eleemosynary grant, of a curtile to magister Iosbertus, the poor and the brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. The curtile is situated between the public way that leads to Bethlehem and the way that leads to Acheldamach, the lacus Germani and a garden of the Hospital. In return the Hospital gives Hodeardis 760 besants out of charity and receives the whole family into confraternity. Henricus, Guido, Isabella with her husband Iohannes, Benedicta with her husband Ioffridus, and Iasza with her husband Henricus Balistarius guarantee the transfer. King Amalric’s confirmation is itself an eleemosynary grant. He gives the casalia of Tyron and Corveis. The territory of the latter, stretching towards the castle [castellum] of Margat, has boundaries that were established by the Sarraceni in old times. He also gives the gastina of Meois, the garden before the door of the Hospital at Valenia, and the meadow [pratum] before the casale of Tyron, free from all exactions. He confirms the gift made to the Hospital by Abdelmessie raiz de Margat of three parts of the casale called Meserafe, so that in future all the produce will be shared with Georgius gener Abdelmessie, who holds the fourth part. They confirm the eleemosynary gifts of Mauricius Montis Regalis dominus to the Hospital. These are specified as: a casale in the territory of Mons Regalis called Benisalem with its villani on both sides of the river; in the vicus of Mons Regalis, Caissar filius Tamin with his heirs and possessions, and land which is situated between the vineyard of Seguinus and [that of] Gullelmus Hasin; a house in Mons Regalis; a casale called Canzil in the territory of Petra with its rustici and with a gastina called Hable which is adjacent to it; a house in Petra; land next to the vineyard that belonged to Johannes Castellanus and afterwards to the archbishop; a ship [navis] for transporting Hospitaller goods, freed from any duty [sine precio vel munere].
