text: c.1155. Patriarch F[ulcher] of Jerusalem, A. ecclesiae sancti sepulcri prior and the entire convent of the Holy Sepulchre address a sealed general letter to all Christians, prelates and faithful, rich and poor. Because many who wish or have vowed to visit Jerusalem are prevented from doing so through illness, poverty and so on, they offer this consolation. Having collected relics from the sites of Christ’s Nativity and nurture in Bethlehem, his abandonment in the Temple, his capture in Gethsemane, his Passion on Calvary, his glorious tomb in the Holy Sepulchre, his Ascension on the Mount of Olives, the death of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Mount Sion and her burial in the Valley of Jehoshaphat, they have incorporated them in a crucifix, dedicated to the blood of Christ, which is to be brought to the West by Conradus canonicus, the patriarch’s representative, promising those of the faithful incapable of the journey who venerate it absolution of their vows and the same indulgence they would have received had they been to Jerusalem.c.1155. comments: [92] Hugo magister de Asinaria witnessed a Hospitaller document of Dec. 25 1156 – Dec. 24 1157, but by Feb.10 – Dec. 24 1163 he had been succeeded in post in the Asnerie by a brother called Bernard, who was to have a long tenure. The rental cannot, therefore, date from after 1163. It is clear, however, that this, and an associated Holy Sepulchre rental of c.1165, must have grown out of a desire to resolve a dispute between the Hospitallers and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre, which had led Patriarch Fulcher of Angoulême to make a fruitless journey to the papal curia. He returned to the East in 1156 and a consequence of his failure must have been the decision to come to terms with the Hospitallers. Two documents (of Jun/Dec. 24 1156 – Nov. 20 1157), in which he was involved, recording an agreement between the Hospitallers and the Holy Sepulchre by which each agreed to return properties they had illegitimately occuped, date most probably from 1157. The Hospitaller rental must be dated, therefore, to 1157-1163, a period in which other individuals referred to in it also flourished. See Tischler, Die Burgenses, passim.
