text: February 12. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to Patriarch J[acobus Pantaléon] of Jerusalem, relating that at one time the late Pope I[nnocentius IV] granted the master and brothers of the knighthood of the Temple of Jerusalem that they could received everywhere outside the Kingdom of Germany up to 10,000 silver marks from money spent in redemption of crusading vows in support of the Holy Land; from money gained via usury, robbery, or other evil ways that the faithful order to be restored in their last will or are ready to do so while they are living, even if they are healthy, as long as those to whom the money must be restored cannot be found at all; and from testaments of the faithful with bequests to the Holy Land without expressing specific places or persons, assigning them certain executors for this. Afterward, however, the present pope, before the master and brothers, as they claimed, received that amount, ordered that the addressee receive this money from redemptions and bequests in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, but in order to avoid trouble between the patriarch and the Templars, in answer to the patriarch's prayers the pope granted that the Templars could receive this money in the Kingdom of Germany and everywhere else outside the Kingdom of Jerusalem. But because, as the patriarch asserts, the Templars are prepared to cede to the patriarch the money gained via usury, robbery, or other evil ways, of which they have not yet received anything in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the pope grants that the patriarch can receive this money as well, considering the patriarch's fear of the coming of the Mongols (Tartari ) and his expenses in defending his church and subjects and the Holy Land while he is in exile from his church with tenuous incomes. If he leaves, restores, or gives anything to the people from whom he received this money, however, they shall not be absolved for that amount at all. February 12. Lateran. text: March 9. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to the master and brothers of the house of the knighthood of the Temple of Jerusalem, praising their role in support of the Holy Land in the arenga, and responding to their requests by granting that archbishops, bishops, and other prelates of churches shall be content with the right that they and their predecessors are known to have had hitherto with respect to them and the churches they have and hold, saving a fee (procuratio) if any is owed to them. If they try to seek or extort more, the addressees can refuse on apostolic authority. March 9. Lateran. text: March 17. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to the master and brothers and houses of the knighthood of the Temple of Jerusalem, relating that some time ago he heard that they and other religious having a privilege of exemption were constructing chapels and oratories without the consent and authority of the diocesans and, damnably holding in contempt the sentences that the ordinaries pronounced against persons and places subject to those ordinaries, the addressees rashly had the divine offices celebrated in those places and chapels and oratories that they constructed, without showing that this was allowed by a papal privilege or indulgence. With the advice of the cardinals the pope ordered established that they and other exempt religious shall not dare to construct oratories or chapels in places that are not exempt without permission from the diocesans nor celebrate or have celebrated the divine offices in places so constructed or in places that are not exempt when they are under interdict by the ordinaries. If they dare do this, the ordinaries of the places shall restrain them, and if their conservators pronounce sentences to the contrary, the pope orders them completely revoked, prohibiting the addressees from daring to do this without papal permission or special papal privilege. Since the addressees do have special papal privileges and indulgences for these things, however, they humbly asked the pope to provide for them. So the pope wants them to know that it was not his intention with this constitution to diminish these privileges and indulgences granted them by the Apostolic See, as can be gathered clearly from the constitution. text: March 18. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to the master and brothers of the knighthood of the Temple of Jerusalem, relating that, since he established some things because he wanted the concession or collation of priories to be done purely and cleanly according to God, he was asked on their behalf to explain his intention to them more fully. The pope explains that a while ago he learned that abbots with priors whom they install in their priories, before or after this installation, were accustomed to receiving a certain sum of money or a certain portion of the income of those priories, such that, with these priors paying this money or portion or perhaps an annual pension or a rent to the abbots, the customary hospitality or alms was thereby taken away in those priories and the number of those serving was reduced, and the business of those priories was less carefully dealt with, since it happened that less worthy priors were installed or ordained in them. The pope then describes the measures he took on the advice of the cardinals, without saying that it applies to the addressees or Jerusalem. March 18. Lateran. text: May 2. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to the bishop of Beirut (Beritensis), relating that Patriarch J[acques Pantaléon] of Jerusalem, papal legate, humbly asked the pope to assist him with the expenses he went to in coming to the Apostolic See and staying there and also traveling, since he is obliged to his creditors for no small sum of money and he must go to further expense as befits the burden and honour of his rank. The pope therefore orders the master and brothers of the house of the knighthood of the Temple of Jerusalem to give and assign to the patriarch without any trouble up to 100 marks sterling from the sum of money that the late Patriarch G[erold] of Jerusalem deposited in their house at Acre. If they do not, the addressee is ordered to compel them to do so with ecclesiastical censure, after a warning, without appeal, various obstacles notwithstanding. May 2. Lateran. text: August 20. Viterbo. Pope Alexander IV writes to the master and brothers of the house of the knighthood of the Temple in Acre, relating that the count of Jaffa (Joppensis) is led by such passion for the business of the Holy Land that, as the pope has understood, for the upkeep of the castle of Jaffa (Joppense) he has not only spent all his movable goods and a good portion of his inheritance, but he is heavily burdened by debts. Thus he cannot maintain it alone without help from elsewhere. Since, therefore, as the pope has understood, while alive the late Patriarch G[erold of Lausanne] of Jerusalem deposited in the house of the addressees a certain sum of money for the aid to the Holy Land that is believed to amount to 16,000 Saracen besants and more, and since the loss of the castle would be very detrimental to the Holy Land and the faithful of those parts, the pope orders the addressees to provide the count, without trouble or delay, up to 1,000 silver marks of that money to be spent in support of the castle as the count sees fit. Otherwise the pope is sending a letter to Patriarch [Jacques Pantaléon] of Jerusalem to compel them to do so with ecclesiastical censure, after a warning, appeal removed. August 20. Viterbo. text: November 17. Anagni. Pope Alexander IV writes to the archbishops, bishops, deans, archdeacons, and their vicars and officials whom this letter reaches, relating that it was proposed to him on behalf of the master and brothers of the house of the knighthood of the Temple of Jerusalem that, although they have no bishop or prelate except the Roman pontiff and the Apostolic See has granted them that no one can promulgate sentences of excommunication or interdict against them without the pope’s special mandate, some of the addressees envy these liberties and promulgate such sentences against their men and families and lands and against those who associate with them in food and drink, in mills, trials, contracts, and merchandise and in any other way, to their prejudice and detriment. Thus they only observe the words of the papal privileges and not their force or power, excommunicating them after a fashion, since they so not allow others to communicate with them, so they seem to be judged by the judgment of the Jews, such that others find it worse to communicate with them than with excommunicates. The pope therefore strictly prohibits the addressees from daring to pronounce such sentences in deceptive opposition to these privileges, and they are to revoke without trouble those that they have perhaps promulgated, lest the pope be forced to deal with them in other ways.
