initiator: Bohemond IV, prince of Antioch and count of Tripoli
recipient: Hospital of Saint Mary of the Germans
institution: Hospital of Saint Mary of the Germans
text: Sept. 4. Bohemond, dei gratia princeps Anthiochie et comes Tripolis, makes a sealed grant to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans. He gives a pecia terre, which belongs to him and is situated within the town [burgus] of Tripoli next to the main wall [prope magistrum murum] of the burgus, but he reserves houses built on the land held by him and his homines. The land is bounded on the east by the staircase [gradus] of the great tower of the main wall. It stretches as far as the land of the bishop of Tripoli and from there to the wall of the Temple, which is to the west and adjoins the main wall of the burgus. It ought to be distinguished from Bohemond’s land and the land of Berengerus de Sura, near the boundary of the land of the Temple. Bohemond also gives the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans 3 towers on the stretch of wall between the staircase already mentioned and the land of the commandery [domus] of the Temple, on condition that nothing is built other than houses for its mansio, that if the wall of the burgus is damaged in consequence of its building work, it is bound to repair it, and that the prince and his homines can enter and leave by the posterns in the wall. [300] Frater Gaufridus thesaurarius domus Templi reports to Pope Innocent III that he delivered the pope’s letters on the matter of [the marriage of] dominus Erardus and domina Philippa to the late Patriarch Albert of Jerusalem and the archbishop of Tyre. The patriarch and the archbishop summoned Erardus and forbade him in the pope’s name to contract marriage under pain of excommunication. They also interviewed Philippa in the palatium of the king and issued the same prohibition. But shortly afterwards Erardus and Philippa married secretly, in defiance of the papal mandate. comments: [300] For the date see Claverie, L’ordre du Temple 3:423. [301] On 31 July 1215 Pope Innocent III ordered all the prelates of France to sanction those who aided Erardus de Brena, who had married one of the daughters of the late Henricus comes Trecensis. She was illegitimately conceived, because Isabella of Jerusalem had illicitly married Henricus and, before him, Conradus marchio Montisferrati. Patriarch Albert of Jerusalem had prohibited the marriage of Erardus, but, taking advantage of Albert’s death, Erardus had travelled to Genoa and crossed the Alps, disturbing both France and the Holy Land. text: Sept. 20. Acre. Frater Petrus de Monteacuto magister militum Templi informs Bishop N. of Ely [Elimensis episcopus] [322] that enough peregrini reached Egypt on the passage after the capture of Damietta and the castle of Taphneos to defend Damietta and the castles. The papal legate and the clergy wanted to launch a campaign against the infidel, but the secular leaders of the army [barones exercitus] refused, because they did not believe there were enough troops both to engage the enemy and garrison the cities and castles. Meanwhile the sultan of Egypt has fortified a camp not far from Damietta and has built bridges to obstruct any Christian advance. The Saraceni armed galeiae and in September began to obstruct the Christian lines of communications at sea. In spite of a lack of funds, which made it hard for the Christians to maintain their fleet, the Christians armed galeiae, galiones and other vessels [vasa] to resist them. Coradinus, the sultan of Damascus, knowing that the cities of Acre and Tyre were denuded of warriors and people, launched an assault and besieged and took castrum Peregrinorum, although there were many peregrini in Acre. Meanwhile Seraph, the son of Saphadinus and the brother of the sultans of Egypt and Damascus, has prevailed in warfare against eastern Saraceni, although he could not overcome all of them easily. Given the threat he poses to Antioch and Tripoli, Acre and Egypt, and the Templar castles, the dissension among the Saraceni is a comfort to the Christians. The emperor has been expected, but if he does not come during the next summer, either Syria or Egypt will be threatened. Help is desperately needed soon.Sept. 20. Acre.
