text: 1130 – Aug. 31 1133. Bernardus Bituricensis and his wife Ahoys make an eleemosynary grant to the canons and church of the Holy Sepulchre. They give their house and whatever else they have, including a piece of land near the gate of St Stephen in Jerusalem, which they acquired in return for the payment of a census of 2 besants. They will remain in possession of the house and their other property for their lives. After their deaths a third part of the property is to pass to the canons, although if one of them survives a further third part can pass to the canons in return for support for the rest of the survivor’s life. A third part will go to their daughter and her heirs, if she marries, although it can be exchanged with the canons for 100 besants and if she dies childless it will also pass to the canons. Petrus prior Sancti Sepulchri takes Bernardus and Ahoys into confraternity, in recognition of which Bernardus and Ahoys will give the the church a justa of wine and 2 loaves three times a year: at Christmas, Easter and on the 15 July [Festum Jherusalem]. text: Jan. 1 – Aug. 31. Melisende, dei gratia Ierosolimorum regina, with the agreement of her son Baldwin rex Jerusalem, records that she has made a sealed eleemosynary grant, exchanging property with Raimundus Hospitalis pauperum Christi provisor. The Hospital of St John of Jerusalem has made over to her a bath house in the vicus of St Leonard in Acre. In return Melisende has given a logia before the doors of the basilica of St John the Baptist and houses that had belonged to Franco castellanus Acconensis, which Melisende had claimed and had reverted to the crown. Melisende also adds to the exchange land [terra] on the right side of the road that runs from Acre to Casale Album, belonging to the camerarius. The other three sides of the land are bounded by Casale Album, Disderum and the property of Suriani. Melisende, together with King Baldwin, confirms under seal a purchase made on behalf of the Hospital by the aforesaid Raimundus, tutor pauperum, of a house with a tower adjacent to it, which had belonged to Robertus vicecomes Acconensis. The purchase was legitimately made in the presence of Clarembaldus vicecomes Acconensis, with the agreement of Agnes, the wife of Robertus and the mother of Clarembaldus. Melisende confirms a purchase made by the aforesaid Frater Raimundus for the use of the poor and the hospital [xenodochium] of a casale called Assera from Johannes domnus de Bethsan, although Johannes has retained the rustici. Witnesses of the exchange: Geraldus de Valentia vicecomes, who presided over the exchange; Menardus de Portu; Deauratus and others. Raimundus Hospitalis sancte Iherusalem pauperum Christi dispensator, records that, with the agreement of Count Raymond II of Tripoli, his wife Countess Hodierna and his son Raimundus, he has bought 2 casalia, called Kafarrique and Fellara, and houses in Castellum Album from domina Armensendis de Castro Novo, with the agreement of her daughters Ugona and Berengaria and of Leodogarius, the husband of Ugona. Raimundus also accepts houses in burgo, given in alms by Count Raymond of Tripoli, together with a casale called Cendina, which is across the river, and a vineyard which had belonged to Hassennus Riserius. He also acquired the houses in castello left to the Hospital by Rigaudus, who has died. text: First half of 1170 (probably c. June). [122] Gibertus, domus [Hospitalis] sanctorum pauperum minister, with the agreement of all his brothers [universi collegii nostri] records under seal how dominus A. Hungrie, Dalmacie et Croacie dux [Bela III], who was intending to pilgrimage to Jerusalem with his wife, had transferred as an eleemosynary gift money worth 10000 gold besants to the Hospital and through his emissary Retchab and the Hospitaller brother Bernardus had asked the Order to buy lands, vineyards and casalia near Jerusalem, the produce of which would provide both for the duke and his wife in the Holy Land and after his death would provide for the poor in the Hospital. During his lifetime, if he and his wife resided elsewhere, the Hospital could enjoy the fruits. His heirs would have no rights to the properties, but should his sons wish to serve [famulari] the Hospital, the Order would provide them with horses and arms. Lands near Jerusalem were hard to find, but Gibertus and his brothers give the duke, not for money but out of love, castellum Emaus, Aqua Bella, Belveer and Saltus Muratus, all near Jerusalem with cultivated and uncultivated lands, vineyards, orchards [pomeria], woods, with wheat and barley, wine and fruits, and animals. The Hospital has also bought in the city of Acre a palatium, which belonged to the late Giraldus de Cuniculis and 4 houses belonging to Fulco Moneta, and outside the city an orchard [pomarium] and a casale 1 league [leuga] away for 11000 Saracen besants, drawn from the duke’s money. These properties will return annually 1100 besants. The duke and his wife will receive the income either from the 3 casalia near Jerusalem or from those in Acre, whichever is the greater. The Hospitallers do not yet have a charter of confirmation of the properties in and near Acre from King Amalric, who has travelled to Antioch, but they are confident of his agreement when he returns. text: Beginning of May - mid Jul. Jerusalem. Henricus Bawarie et Saxonie dux makes an eleemosynary grant for the remission of his sins and those of, among others, his wife Mathilda of England. He establishes 3 lamps [lampades] to burn perpetually in the church of the Holy Sepulchre: one in the Holy Sepulchre itself, one in the Calvary chapel, and the third before the relic of the True Cross. He provides these lamps with an endowment to cover the purchase of oil, by buying, with the agreement of King Amalric, the houses of Michael Furbitor next to the wall of the church of the Holy Sepulchre for 500 besants. These will return rents [censuales] of 20 besants a year. Patriarch Amalric of Jerusalem, who seals this gift, approves it. He and his convent have promised to buy the oil to keep the lamps alight. text: Jun. 1-30. Patriarch Amalric of Jerusalem makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to Petrus prior Dominici Sepulcri and his chapter, conceding jurisdiction [juriditio] over a vineyard that had belonged to Petrus de Sancto Jacobo, whose share in it the canons of the Holy Sepulchre had bought. The vineyard is bordered on the east and north by a vineyard belonging to the abbey of St Mary of the Latins. On the west is the royal highway [strata regia] that goes from the leprosary of St Lazarus to the lacus Legerii. On the south is the street [via] that goes from the church of St Stephen to the same highway. The grant is made by the patriarch on the conditions that when he dies, the canons will feed 13 poor persons and 13 clerics to sing psalms for his Requiem; that annually on the anniversary of his death 13 poor persons shall be fed; and that 2 candles, costing 1 besant, should be brought to the patriarchal chapel and lit at Michaelmas. He gives a mill outside the walls of Antioch, situated on the river fer, below the patriarch’s mill, which he had bought and repaired. The mill has 3 millstones [peires] and the Hospital of St Mary of Germans has licence to install a fourth. The mill’s dependencies include a fishery [pescherie]. Bohemond adds the gift of a vineyard, which he had planted near the mill, and the winepress [pressoir] in it. He confirms their purchase of a house [in Acre] from Iohannes de Conchi for 620 marchae argenti and another house, given by Iohannes, which is situated next to the church of the Holy Sepulchre, together with licence to build a vault stretching from a house Iohannes already has, so long as the platea publica of the city is not obstructed. Frederick also confirms the gift made by King John to the Order of a barbacan and all the land between the city wall of Acre and the sea, that is to say from the Gate of Goffridus Tortus to the barbacan, with all the stationes there, and with the right to build whatever the Order wishes on the land, provided it does not interfere with the via publica and the traffic on it.
