Writing to the abbas et conventus monasterii Episcopie, in the diocese of Nicosia, Pope Gregory IX recalls that when the abbey was founded, due to the generosity of the king of Jerusalem, it adopted the Augustinian Rule and, with the agreement of T. archiepiscopus Nicosiensis, was incorporated into the Premonstratensian Order, but that the papal letter confirming the Order’s rights of visitation failed to mention the archbishop’s rights to obedience and the oath the abbot should make to him. The pope, therefore, orders the patriarch of Antioch, the papal legate, the archiepiscopus Appamiensis and P. canonicus Antiochensis to investigate and, if they find that the pope has been told the truth, to forbid the use of the previous papal letter and to order the abbas to accord the archbishop his rights of obedience and reverence.
