text: Jan. 3. Lateran. Stressing the concern he has for the patriarchates of Antioch and Jerusalem, Pope Innocent III recalls a long dispute over the boundary between the churches of Tyre and Petra [Petertensis], the orders of Pope Lucius II to the then patriarch of Jerusalem when he was in France, the intervention of Pope Eugenius III and the threat to Antioch from the Sarraceni. He orders the patriarch of Jerusalem and canons of the Holy Sepulchre to answer within a year from the next Feast of All Saints the complaints of the patriarch and canons of Antioch that they ignored papal mandates on this issue.

Pope Innocent III writes to the canons of the church of Bethlehem in relation to a disputed election to the bishopric, between R. subdiaconus (of Bethlehem) [268] and P. canonicus sepulcri domini. The case had already been heard in Rome, but has not been resolved. Meanwhile the pope condemns V. canonicus Bethlehemitanus, who had accepted a bribe of 500 Saracen besants for his vote in the election, for simony and deprives him of office.

Because the dispute between the patriarchs of Antioch and Jerusalem over the boundary between the province of Tyre and the province Petracensis has not been resolved over a long period Pope Innocent orders the patriarch of Jerusalem, papal legate, and the canons of the Holy Sepulchtre to send suitable representatives to him in Rome during the 3 years from the next Feast of St Luke to answer the charges made by the patriarch of Antioch against the patriarch of Jerusalem’s predecessor and the canons.
