text: † mid Sept. In castello Messiac. The Vetus de Monte writes under seal to Duke Leopold VI of Austria, [246] clearing King Richard I of England of the charge that he had been involved in the murder of Conrad of Montferrat. He reports that one of his brothers, sailing from Salteleia to the land of the Assassins, was forced to land in Tyre, where Conrad killed him and took a large sum of money. The Assassins had demanded the return of the cash, but Conrad refused, blamed Reinaldus dominus Sydonis for the murder and planned to drown Edrisus, another Assassin emissary. So 2 of the Assassin brothers killed Conrad.
