text: Aug. 1-31. Rialto, Venice. Vitalis Michael, the doge of Venice, with the agreement of the people of Venice, gives the church of St Mark [in Venice], the operis procurator of which [in the East] is Leonardus Fradellus, the Venetian ruga in Tyre. This ruga was given to Venice for the lodging [pro hospitatione] of Venetians when they went there but was released [to pay for] the building of the church of St Mark in Tyre. The ruga is situated next to the porta magistra of the port on the left side. Its head is on the ruga Magistra and it extends as far as the boundary of the royal section of the city [ad divisionem Regis]. The doge also gives the church of St Mark the Venetian [house called] darus and an oven in Tripoli, together with their revenues [redditus]. He confirms the gift of a rent of 300 besants, drawn by the Venetians annually from the royal funda, which King Baldwin gave to Doge Dominicus Michael and which was afterwards drawn from the revenues of the catena of the port of Acre, although it was confiscated by King Fulk in the time of Doge Rolandus Contarenus and is still withheld. Leonardus Fradellus is given authority to regain this rent. There follows a long list of Venetian witnesses.

text: Jun. 1-30. Venice. Rialto. Sebastiano Ziani, doge of Venice, confirms for the church of St Mark and Stephanus Barocius, procurator operis S. Marci, the grant of the Venetian third of Tyre for 5 years, made in January 1164 by Doge Vitalis Michael to Leonardus Fradellus, procurator at the time. Exceptions are a street [ruga], which stretches from the [city] gate to the port, having on one side the ruga sancti Marci and the royal part of Tyre, 300 besants [of revenue], one of the better mills, 2 casalia and one of the better gardens, which were granted to the bishoprics of Jesolo and Torcello. Conceded to the church of St Mark are the revenues from the port and gates, the plateae, fontici, baths, ovens, weights and measures of wine and oil [de stateris, rubis et de mensuris vini et olei], mills and taxation on glass [dationes de vitro]. This is to compensate the church of St Mark for the 1500 besants it raised to assist the Venetians of the ship [navis] of Romanus Mairanus, who fled to Acre from captivity in Constantinople, and for its gift to Venice of 600 Venetian librae. The church may not alienate the property, which should always remain in Venetian ownership. It may not enjoy the proceeds of sugar production in the first year, but can in the sixth, the year following the end of the grant. The witnesses listed are Venetian.

text: Apr. 5. Lateran. Pope Innocent III writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem and the archbishop of Caesarea. He describes how the bishop of Paphos came into his presence, bringing the sentence delivered by the [judge delegates], the bishops of Acre, Tiberias and Beirut, in the case between the archbishop of Tyre and the plebanus of the church of St Mark [in Tyre]. The bishops had followed the papal mandate in demanding that the parties appear before them, but the plebanus had refused to accept the papal mandate or appear before them, appealing instead directly to the Holy See. The bishops visited Tyre, heard testimony and excommunicated the plebanus, restoring his church to the parochial jurisdiction of the archbishop. But representatives of the doge of Venice informed the pope that the Venetians had at the time of the conquest been granted one third of Tyre and that the church of St Mark in Tyre had had parochial rights for a long time. They present letters from Popes Clement III and Celestine III in support of their argument. It was pointed out, moreover, that two of the judge delegates were suffragans of Tyre and therefore biased. Innocent quashes the judgement of the bishops and orders the archbishop of Tyre to restore its rights to the church. The patriarch and archbishop should have this decision published in Tyre.

The church of St Mark in the Venetian third part of Tyre had been granted full parochial rights [in baptismo, penitentia, sepulturis, decimationibus, benedicendia nubentibus, tenendis scolis et mulieribus] by Popes Clement III and Celestine III until the province of Jerusalem would be restored to the Christians. Innocent himself had reversed the sentence, but had ordered the archbishop of Tyre to do nothing until the papal legates arrived. He has heard how since the death of the archbishop the patriarch of Jerusalem and the canons of Tyre have challenged the position of the plebanus. Innocent orders them to desist until the legates, Cardinal Soffred of St Praxedis and Cardinal Peter of St Marcellus, arrive.
