He gives the Hospital a house in Jerusalem which he had been given to him by King Baldwin I. The house is to be held with full rights, except that Balduinus can lodge in it when he comes to Jerusalem. It is situated between the Hospital’s oven and mill. In return Balduinus is given by Rogerius Paganus, frater noster, a house in Beirut. The exchange is made in the presence of Balduinus. text: Jan. 1 – Aug. 31. Melisende, dei gratia Ierosolimorum regina, with the agreement of her son Baldwin rex Jerusalem, records that she has made a sealed eleemosynary grant, exchanging property with Raimundus Hospitalis pauperum Christi provisor. The Hospital of St John of Jerusalem has made over to her a bath house in the vicus of St Leonard in Acre. In return Melisende has given a logia before the doors of the basilica of St John the Baptist and houses that had belonged to Franco castellanus Acconensis, which Melisende had claimed and had reverted to the crown. Melisende also adds to the exchange land [terra] on the right side of the road that runs from Acre to Casale Album, belonging to the camerarius. The other three sides of the land are bounded by Casale Album, Disderum and the property of Suriani. Melisende, together with King Baldwin, confirms under seal a purchase made on behalf of the Hospital by the aforesaid Raimundus, tutor pauperum, of a house with a tower adjacent to it, which had belonged to Robertus vicecomes Acconensis. The purchase was legitimately made in the presence of Clarembaldus vicecomes Acconensis, with the agreement of Agnes, the wife of Robertus and the mother of Clarembaldus. Melisende confirms a purchase made by the aforesaid Frater Raimundus for the use of the poor and the hospital [xenodochium] of a casale called Assera from Johannes domnus de Bethsan, although Johannes has retained the rustici. Agnes, the wife of Galius miles, who is now a brother of the Hospital of St John [frater et humilis servus pauperum Iherusalem], makes an eleemosynary grant, giving the Hospital of St John her houses [in Acre], although the Hospitallers allow her to retain for her own use one of them, consisting of a palacium, stables [stabularia], cistern and court [curia]. She presents the gift to Clarembaldus vicecomes Acconensis and [through him] to frater Giraldus Hugonis preceptor totius domus Hospitalis Iherusalem, frater Giraldus magister de Accon and other brothers, including Petrus Amelius capellanus, Antelmus, Berengarius, Pons custos infirmorum and Petrus de Limoges. The Hospitallers promise her in return a life rent of 80 besants a year, payable on the Feast of St Peter at the beginning of August. She assigned as a marriage portion [dotis nomine] 300 besants to the daughter of Willelmus, raised on a statio in the rua Surianorum, which they held of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. Forced by necessity, Petronilla and Adam have the agreement of Willelmus and his daughter to act as they please with respect to the statio. They give the statio as an alms-gift to the Hospital, receiving in charity 360 besants, and with the agreement of the chapter of the Hospital they raise the marriage portion of 300 besants on lands and houses that they hold of the Hospital in Cacho. At this time Gibertus magister Hospitalis is overseas. He gives Bilbais [Bulbesium] with everything the inhabitants of the city and its territory possess, all its inhabitants and as much of the cultivated and uncultivated land extending towards Syria and the sea that with Bilbais itself will return 100000 old besants [bisantii vetera] a year. He adds a further grant of 50000 old besants a year, to be raised in 10 Egyptian cities: 5000 each from Old Cairo [in Babylone], Thanes, Damietta, the insula Mall., Alexandria, Chus, Suana, Whe, Ahideph and Fun. In each of these cities the Hospital is to have one of the better houses or palatia after the king has made his choice. And if the treasure of the mulanus and those in other cities and ville come into the king’s hands without the use of force, he gives a tithe of the treasure of Cairo [Caharium], other cities and the land. If, on the other hand, force has to be employed, the Hospital will receive a tithe only after the half owing to the king according to the law of war [secundum militares iusticias] has been subtracted, although the magister and brothers will also have their due share of the spoils of war [per militias partes]. In return the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, its magister and brothers, will provide 500 milites and the same number of well armed turcopoli for the expedition. They will muster at Larriz and will report to the marescalcus or the comestabulus. If the troops provided are more or less than those specified, the rewards for the Hospital mentioned above will be adjusted proportionately. In whatever future expedition the brothers of the Hospital display their banner [vexillum] they will enjoy all the spoil, unless the king is himself present in person. This applies to future [expeditions], if [Egypt] is not taken and restored to Christianity. text: Aug. 1-31. At the request of Josbertus magister Hospitalis, frater Garinus preceptor and their brothers, and with the agreement of his chapter, Patriarch Amalric of Jerusalem makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, to benefit the sick. He gives the annual census of 20 besants, payable at Easter, which his church had taken from the house that used to belong to Rotbertus de Belgenci. And he gives the Hospitallers licence to build on the site of that house and the houses of Willelmus Patronus, the abbess of St Lazarus, Petrus Sellarius and Parsanus in the street [vicus] that descends from the Gate of David, when they acquire them. In return the magister and preceptor, with the advice of the chapter of the Hospital of St John, give the patriarch the following rents which they had enjoyed: 36 besants from the house of Odo de Barulo, payable in two equal instalments at Easter and on the Feast of the Holy Cross; 16 besants from the house of Henricus Alemmanus, payable in two equal instalments at Christmas and on the Feast of St John. These houses are next to one another in the street [vicus] in the patriarchal quarter that leads to the Gate of St Stephen. They are bordered to the north by houses which owe rent to the Hospitallers and to the south by a volta, which owes rent to the Hospitallers and is below the house of a Surianus. The Hospitallers also give the canons of the Holy Sepulchre the rent of 7 besants, payable in the middle of March, they have drawn on the statio of Lambertus Patriarche which is in the vicus Coquinatorum. The canons had given this statio to the Hospitallers in exchange for some empty land belonging to the Hospital before the Gate of St Helena. The Hospitallers also gave the rent of 1 besant, which the canons had paid [for this exchange] on the Feast of St Stephen. The Hospitallers confirm that they owe the patriarch 60 besants in rent a year.
