text: c. Dec.15-17. Lateran. Pope Innocent III writes to King Leon I of Cilician Armenia. He has heard an appeal for assistance from the magister of the Knights Templar [militia Templi] and emissaries of the patriarch and prince of Antioch, the count of Tripoli and the commune of Antioch. They had described how after the Sarraceni had abandoned the castle [castrum] called Gaston, which the Knights Templar had legitimately possessed, Armenian forces had entered and held Gaston. Leon had promised the patriarch, prince and commune to restore it to the Knights Templars but had delayed doing so. He had proposed to the Holy See that it be held by his uncle Milo. Innocent orders Leon to restore the castle to the Knights Templar. It will be up to the king to present his case for judgement by the pope himself or his legates, who are sailing on the next passage.

text: Jan. 18. Rome. St Peter’s. The magister and brothers of the Knights Templar [militia Templi] have complained that the king of Cilician Armenia has fired their casalia, confiscating beasts and crops to the value of 50000 besants, and has seized 2 of their castles [castra], rupes W[i]ll[elm]i and rupes Ruissoli. Pope Innocent III encourages King Leon to make satisfaction and informs him that he has appointed the episcopus Bibliensis and the episcopus Valaniensis as judge delegates to hear the case.

text: Jun. 4. Viterbo. Pope Innocent III writes to King Leon of Cilician Armenia, deploring the dispute between Leon, his nephew and the count of Tripoli and the resulting danger to Antioch. He has received letters from Leon and his emissaries, the archbishop-elect of Tarsus and a brother of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans, but complains of Leon’s obduracy in submitting to judgement on the matter and his use of force. Innocent has asked the count of Tripoli to surrender the citadel of Antioch to Patriarch Peter of Antioch, whom the Knights Templar and the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem have promised to assist. Innocent exhorts Leon to observe a truce with the count of Tripoli and to return the castle of Gaston, which Leon holds unjustly, to the Knights Templar.
