text: Dec. 21. Lateran. Pope Celestine III takes the brothers of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans under papal protection. He confirms endowments made to them, referring to the place where the hospital is situated, a house in Ascalon [Scalona] with vineyards, Zamzi, houses in Ramla, a house, a vineyard and possessions at Jaffa, the casale of Capharsin, the volta near the Gate of St Nicholas [at Acre], and a house in Tyre. He grants exemption from tithes on noval lands, cultivated by themselves for their use and that of their animals. If a diocesan bishop is not available for episcopal functions, they may find another Latin bishop.They may bury those who wish to be buried in their cemeteries. The election of their magister should be free.

With the agreement of his wife domna Ysabella regis Amalrici filia, Aimery, per dei gratiam rex Ierusalem nonus et rex Cipri, records under seal that he has sold the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans a casale in the region of Acre called Aguille with its villani and gastinae for 3000 Saracen besants. He adds the following gifts: the right to take a rotula of sugar each day from the sugar press [masarium] in his casale called Fiergio for the needs of the sick in the hospital; in Casale Vmberti and his other casalia in the region of Acre the right to take each year 1 clicha of wheat and 1 clicha of barley from every worked carruca, to be provided by the rustici; 5 carrublae paid by the rustici for every 100 goats wintering in Aimery’s land, and 2 out of the 10 carrublae which Aimery levies for every 10 goats; 3 karrublae provided by the rustici for every carrucata owing Aimery 2 besants. Aimery confirms the eleemosynary gifts and old freedom [francisia] granted to the hospital in Cyprus by King Amalric. Aimery, dei gratia rex Ierusalem nonus et rex Cipri, records that Paulus and his brother, the sons of Theodericus de Sarepta, came into his presence and that of his curia and also of the curia of his iurati, and renounced their claims to a house with a garden in Tyre, which the brothers of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans had been given in a charter by comes Henricus and his wife domna Isabella, regis Amalrici filia. At Aimery’s request the brothers of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans give Paulus and his brother 200 besants. With the agreement of his wife the Lady Queen Isabella, Aimery confirms under seal the brothers and the sick of St Mary of the Germans in possession of the house and garden. Witnesses: Raynaldus Sydoniensis; Iohannes de Ybelino regni conestabulus; Balduinus de Betsan; Vilanus de Alneto; Terricus de Tenero Monte; Iohannes regius marescalcus; Adam Coste; Willelmus de Petra; Aimon Daus. text: Feb. 1-28. With the agreement of her husband dominus Aymarus de Lairon and her son Galterus, Iuliana domina Cesaree makes an eleemosynary grant under her husband’s seal to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans in Acre. She gives houses [in Caesarea] that had belonged to Georgius Lormina, the volta of Bernardus Falcilla and the gastina situated between these houses and the house of Petrus de Beugrant, by the public way, as far as another public way that runs towards the sea. She gives the turris Mallart with the platea in front, which extends to the border of a gastina belonging to the Templum Domini, and another little tower opposite, in the angle of the eastern city wall. These towers will be requisitioned by the lord of Caesarea if necessary for defence, but will be returned to the brothers in peacetime. She also gives a field [campus] that belonged to domina Brima. This is bordered on the west by a garden of the Hospital [of St John of Jerusalem], on the south by a field [campus] belonging to dominus Aymarus, on the east by a road that seperates it from the field [campus] of dominus Symon, and on the north by a road that separates it from the field [campus] of domina Grossa. She also confirms an eleemosynary grant made by Iohannes Charles, with the agreement of his mother, his brother Helyas, his sister domina Orgoillosa, Iuliana herself, her husband dominus A. and her son. Iohannes Charles has given the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans 2 fields [campi], a garden and a threshing floor [area] which is at the head of one of the fields. One of these fields has on its western side a field [campus] in which is the agullia sancti Petri, while on the east it borders a field [campus] that had belonged to Rainerius de Gibeleth, in which there was a vineyard. On the south it touches a road that separates it from the garden of the archbishop, and on the north there is a road running to Hadaydon. The area is at the head of this field. The other field [campus] is to the east of these and is separated from them by a little wall [paries]. On the south it touches the field that had belonged to Rainerius de Gibeleth in which there was once a vineyard. On the north it extends from the field [campus] of Iohannes Charles, in which are morvellarii. Within it on the eastern side and at its head is a carob tree [karoblers], next to the field [campus] of dominus Galterius de Cesarea in which there used to be a vineyard. The garden adjoins the city wall on the western side It is separated from the garden of P. Gasta to the east by road. text: Jun. 27. Pope Innocent III confirms Pope Celestine III’s privilege to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans. He confirms papal protection and the Order’s possessions, specifying: the location in which the Hospital is situated; a house in Ascalon with its vineyards; Zanzi; houses in Ramla; a house, vineyards and possessions at Jaffa; a house in Acre; the casale of Cafirsin; a volta near the Gate of St Nicholas [Acre]; a house in Tyre; a house in Caesarea; the casale called Bezal/Besal; the curia sancti Georgii on Cyprus; 2 villae in Armenia called Combedefort and Heion. The Order is exempted from tithes on noval lands. Sacred oils, consecrations and ordinations can be performed by [any] diocesan bishop. The faithful can be buried in the Order’s cemeteries if they so wish, provided they are not excommunicated or under an interdict. The Order will follow the practice of the Knights Templar with regard to clergy and milites and that of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem with respect to the care of the poor and the sick. There is to be no violence permitted in enclosure. The elections of magistri should be free.

The gift comprises land, bought by Garnerus from Iulianus de Faloisse, in which there is a lime kiln [calidus furnus]. To the north is a road and to the south a hill. Garnerus also gave a garden, bordering on the south the threshing floors [areae] of Tarsia. In that land there is a corner of wasteland and on the western side is a mulberry tree [morus] and a field called Migramme. Above is a piece of land [frustrum terre] bordering on the land of the house of the Holy Sepulchre and on the east, towards the hill, is some land and a half-ruined vouta, in which there is a cistern and a wine-press [vrequinnus ad racemos decalcandos]. He confirms the eleemosynary grant made by his father King Aimery of Jerusalem and Cyprus, as is contained in the Order’s charter. He adds as a further eleemosynary grant rents of 200 modii of wheat, 200 metrae of wine and 400 modii of barley, to be taken each year from his casale of Lefquara, the grain at harvest and the wine at vintage. If Lefquara should pass out of royal hands, the rent will nevertheless be paid.
