text: Mar. 24 1163 - Mar. 7/26 1164. Bohemond III, son of Raymond late prince of Antioch, makes an eleemosynary grant to Girbertus Hospitalis magister and the brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, confirming all the endowments made in alms by his father Prince Raymond and the other princes and barones throughout the land of Antioch. He adds the gift of a ship [grippus] on the lake [of Antioch], with the freedom that his barones of Antioch already enjoyed, and the house of Barutellus in Antioch, which Barutellus and his wife Sarracena left in alms after their deaths. He confirms all the gifts [beneficia] made to the Order, with the proviso that a knight’s fief [feodum militis] should not be diminished and his curia does not lose servicium. He specifies: a house in Antioch with a garden next door, near the church of St John Chrystostom [Johannes Os Aurie]; a canuta in vico Malfetanorum; a domuncula with a garden in vico S. Pauli. Outside the city of Antioch, the casalia of Assis, Ursan and Melessis, which were given by Prince Bohemond I; the casale of Balilas in the territory of Harenc; the casale of Churac in the territory of Aironia; the casale of Cisemburg in the territory of Turbassellum; the guastina called Aganir before Tilium; the casalia of Cadir and Ubrie; the casale of Sarata in the territory of Mamistra; the casale of Muserac in the land of Cafardan. Prince Bohemond III also confirms: all the properties in the city of Latakia given by Prince Rainald and his predecessors, specifically the baths which are before the house of the Hospital; and the gastina Danielis and the gastina Ugonis Bernardi which were given by dominus Robertus de Surdavalle. Bohemond III gives the Hospital a garden next to its house in Latakia and a rent [assisia] of 40 besants, drawn annually from the tannery [taneria] in exchange for 3 estaconi on the seashore in Latakia. He gives the turon de Beauda with 3 neighbouring gastinae in the territory of Gibellum. He gives a garden within the walls of Gibellum, where the brothers may erect houses. He confirms the gift from Robertus Manselli of a vineyard beyond the spring, with 3 carrucate terre nearby. In addition he gives the Hospital in Gibellum 5 carrucate terre. The Hospitallers ought to have 13 marcibani of wheat and 4 litrae of oil from every harvest [menses (sic)]. They should collect the wheat from the threshing floors [arei (sic)] and the oil from the presses [masseri]. He also gives a rent [assisia] of 50 besants a year from the revenues of Latakia, [made up of] 14 denarii from the taneria, 14 besants from the tentureria and the remaining besants in oleum fossimani. He gives the Hospitallers freedom to come and go with their goods throughout the principality exempt from the payment of dues [consuetudo et exactio curie]. [113] Bohemond III, son of Prince Raymond, Dei gratia princeps Antiochenus, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, Girbertus Hospitalis magister and his brothers. He gives Rochefort with an abbatia, Cava, Levonia, Tala, Bachfela, Gaigon, Glorieta with a spring that waters the gardens, casale S. Egidii with the torone de Belda, half of Rogia together with the other half which Bohemond has acquired from Reinaldus Masoerius and his heirs, Arcicant, Farmith, Femia with its lake, Logis, Bochabes with the casale de Pailes; other lordships and liege lordships [dominationes et liggianciae] that Femia has in Syria, Berssaphut, castellum de Lacoba and Totomota. With the consent of the inhabitants, Bohemond concedes all these, together with his lordships and liege lordships in them, with the agreement of those who have rights, feoda and heritages. The Hospitallers can make war and peace with neighbouring Muslim powers as they please and, when notified, Bohemond will observe them. On the other hand neither he nor his homines will make treaties with the Sarraceni, nor with any Christians allied to them, without the advice of the Hospitallers. If the Hospitallers are not consulted they can react as they please. They can enjoy all the proceeds of the spoils of war. Bohemond confirms the privileges granted by his father of free import or export of goods without the payment of any tax [consuetudo et exactio curie] All gifts made by his homines will be confirmed, provided that the number of knights’ fiefs [feodum militis] are not lessened and his curia loses servicium. He confirms the gift to the Hospital of the gastina vetus by the miles Godefridus and his wife Albereda, the daughter of the late Ada de Peviers. The gastina adjoins the commandery alongside the public way and is enclosed by a wall. Bohemond also gives the commandery Georgius notarius, the son of Vassilius filii Uardi, and his legitimate heirs, in hominem peculiarem, excepting those properties [hereditates] of which he was already in possession on the day this charter is written.
