text: 1130 – Aug. 31 1133. Bernardus Bituricensis and his wife Ahoys make an eleemosynary grant to the canons and church of the Holy Sepulchre. They give their house and whatever else they have, including a piece of land near the gate of St Stephen in Jerusalem, which they acquired in return for the payment of a census of 2 besants. They will remain in possession of the house and their other property for their lives. After their deaths a third part of the property is to pass to the canons, although if one of them survives a further third part can pass to the canons in return for support for the rest of the survivor’s life. A third part will go to their daughter and her heirs, if she marries, although it can be exchanged with the canons for 100 besants and if she dies childless it will also pass to the canons. Petrus prior Sancti Sepulchri takes Bernardus and Ahoys into confraternity, in recognition of which Bernardus and Ahoys will give the the church a justa of wine and 2 loaves three times a year: at Christmas, Easter and on the 15 July [Festum Jherusalem]. text: Beginning of May - mid Jul. Jerusalem. Henricus Bawarie et Saxonie dux makes an eleemosynary grant for the remission of his sins and those of, among others, his wife Mathilda of England. He establishes 3 lamps [lampades] to burn perpetually in the church of the Holy Sepulchre: one in the Holy Sepulchre itself, one in the Calvary chapel, and the third before the relic of the True Cross. He provides these lamps with an endowment to cover the purchase of oil, by buying, with the agreement of King Amalric, the houses of Michael Furbitor next to the wall of the church of the Holy Sepulchre for 500 besants. These will return rents [censuales] of 20 besants a year. Patriarch Amalric of Jerusalem, who seals this gift, approves it. He and his convent have promised to buy the oil to keep the lamps alight. text: Jun. 1-30. Patriarch Amalric of Jerusalem makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to Petrus prior Dominici Sepulcri and his chapter, conceding jurisdiction [juriditio] over a vineyard that had belonged to Petrus de Sancto Jacobo, whose share in it the canons of the Holy Sepulchre had bought. The vineyard is bordered on the east and north by a vineyard belonging to the abbey of St Mary of the Latins. On the west is the royal highway [strata regia] that goes from the leprosary of St Lazarus to the lacus Legerii. On the south is the street [via] that goes from the church of St Stephen to the same highway. The grant is made by the patriarch on the conditions that when he dies, the canons will feed 13 poor persons and 13 clerics to sing psalms for his Requiem; that annually on the anniversary of his death 13 poor persons shall be fed; and that 2 candles, costing 1 besant, should be brought to the patriarchal chapel and lit at Michaelmas. John, per dei gratiam Latinorum Ierusalem rex decimus et comes Brene, and the Lady Queen Maria his wife confirm under seal for Santius Dominici Sepulcri prior and the chapter of the Holy Sepulchre the canons’ purchase of a garden near Acre, together with houses and land around the garden, from Willelmus Pomaranus. In an eleemosynary grant, John and Maria renounce any rights they have had over the garden and allow the canons to import the produce [fructus et herbae] on their horses into Acre and to sell it without the payment of dues [exactio].
